Hello!

My name is Tom Medwell, and this is a collection of portrait and travel photographs I’ve taken over the past fifteen years. I’m originally from London, and now based between the UK and NYC. Once upon a time, I’d take any photo assignment I could get, which led me to all sorts of adventures, but these days I prefer to meet interesting folks and chat while I wave a camera at their face. There’s not much in the way of fancy lighting or retouching to what I do - I’ve worked in that way before, but I prefer to let the camera do as much work as possible. For me, this makes a more intimate portrait, showing you the person as they are with me rather than any tricks of the light. The same goes for my travel photography: what I’m trying to capture is a moment, as much as a scene.

Over the years I’ve worked around the world, for a diverse mix of people, companies, and institutions, including advertising for Nike with AKQA and W+K, travel assignments for Tank magazine, portraits for The Times, Quanta, and Marvin magazines, and commissions for Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and The Design Museum. I’ve had my work published in about ten books, more magazines than my bookshelf can hold, and also developed an arts practice in the past few years which keeps me looking forward. If you’d like to work with me, drop me a line; I’m available for work across Europe and North America.
